Callers Swamp CIS Helpline

The helpline set up by the taxman to deal with the new CIS scheme has been deluged with 700,000 calls from contractors in just three months.

HM Revenue & Customs' own figures reveal that the high rate - around 54,000 a week in the 13 weeks since the scheme was introduced on Good Friday - is being driven by firms desperate to find out how to pay subcontractors.
